Apple's supply chain cops a beating as suppliers stuck in Shanghai's lockdown have been forced to halt production

We could be about see some price rises all round when the full impact sets in.

What's the key learning?

  • When China is locked down, many of the world's key brands are impacted.
  • Shanghai is a global manufacturing hub, so the supply crunch could be about to become widespread.

👉 Background: Shanghai announced a COVID crackdown in March, introducing a new 'zero-COVID' policy (which is as brutal as it sounds).

👉 What happened: Three major Apple suppliers have had to shut shop in and near Shanghai as a result of the lockdown: iPhone assembler Pegatron, MacBook maker Quanta, and iPad maker Compal Electronics.

👉 What else: All three suppliers are out of action for the foreseeable future, and if this goes on for much longer we could be out of much more than just iPhones📱.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡When China is locked down, a lot of the world's key brands are locked out.

💡 Apple manufacturers 42% of its products in China. But it ain't just Apple. Shanghai is a global manufacturing hub known for supplying companies with steel, cars, electronics and clothing.

💡 By investing so heavily in one area, Apple and co haven't hedged their bets, meaning we could be about to see some price rises all round.
