Waymo says its driverless cars are COMING

Waymo is rolling out self-driving cars to San Francisco - with no drivers in the car at ALL.

What's the key learning?

  • Driverless car companies have struggled to hit their milestones for release
  • 80% of the software has been easy to create - but the last 20% has been extremely challenging

👉 Background: Waymo is a self-driving car unit that was created within Google. Last year, it started running fully driverless rides outside of Phoenix in the US (like no safety driver at all).

👉 What happened: Now, Waymo is now rolling out these self-driving cars in San Francisco, the home of big tech and even bigger traffic!

👉 What else: And with the driverless car market expected to be worth over $100bn a year by 2027, you can see why all the big dawgs are getting involved (think Tesla, Uber, Amazon) - BUT nobody has cracked the self-driving nut yet.

What's the key learning?

💡 Most of the driverless car companies say that 80% of self-driving is simple (like making the car follow the line on the road or avoid crashing).

💡 The next 10% is a little more difficult (like choosing when to go in a roundabout). But the last 10%... that’s where all the big dawgs are stuck (like how the car should respond to child chasing after a ball).

💡 So it's no surprise that Elon Musk has promised self-driving cars since 2014.. But still hasn’t managed to get there.
