Walmart finds a new way to appeal to its younger demographic - cos' lollies at the checkout just ain't enough

Walmart's joining big brands like Nike, Vans, and Gucci... by entering the metaverse.

What's the key learning?

  • Walmart launched two digital lands on Roblox: Walmart Land and Walmart's Universe of Play.
  • Walmart is looking to use the metaverse as a way to become part of Gen Z culture and develop a community with their younger customers.

👉 Background: Walmart has over 10,000 stores in 24 countries and generated $573 billion last year. And those 10,000 stores require a whole lot of physical space.

👉 What happened: Now, Walmart is going where square metres and square feet aren’t a thing. The metaverse. Walmart has launched two digital lands on Roblox:

  • Walmart Land which sells virtual avatar merch
  • Walmart’s Universe of Play which has games and toy worlds

👉 What else: Walmart is joining a whole heap of other brands like Nike, Vans and even Gucci in the metaverse.

What's the key learning?

💡Brands need to be present where people hang out... even if it's just their digital version. We know that kids are hanging out over on Roblox. In fact, the gaming platform already has over 52M daily active users (growing at 25% last year).

💡Walmart is looking to use the metaverse as a way to become part of Gen Z culture and develop a community with their younger customers.

💡In just a short time, brands have been able to build brand equity in the metaverse. 21 million people have visited Nikeland since its launch and over 81 million people have visited Vans World.
