Mother’s Day 2022: How to spoil mum without breaking the bank

Aussies love to spoil their mums (or mum-like figures) on Mother's Day. Here's how you can still do it - on a budget.

What's the key learning?

  • Aussies are set to spend a whopping $745 million on Mother’s Day gifts this year
  • If you don’t want to break the bank (or truly can’t afford to), here are a few ways to spoil someone special on a budget
  • Think: IOU cards, indoor herb gardens... and anything homemade!

Mother’s Day is this Sunday May 8. Thank us later for reminding you.

It’s fair to say that some Aussies go ALL OUT.

Get this: Aussies are set to spend a whopping $745 million on Mother’s Day gifts this year, according to research from the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan. We’re talking an average of $80 per person.

$745 million on gifts?! Cha-ching!

Mother’s Day presents 2022

So what are people actually buying?!

Let’s kick off with the most obvious: flowers! Around 34% of Aussies surveyed said they’d be buying flowers for mum this year.

Florals? For Mother's Day? Groundbreaking 🙄

That’s followed closely by food and alcohol (23%), and clothing, shoes and sleepwear (11%).

Mother’s Day can be a tough day for some who have lost their birth mothers, or have a pretty rocky relationship with theirs. So, these gifts are for mothers-in-law, wives, partners grandmothers and other family members that make us feel special! In fact, one-in-four Aussies are purchasing gifts for people who aren’t their biological mums.

4 ways to spoil mum (without breaking the bank)

With the cost of goods ramping up faster than ScoMo and Albo's election campaign, we’ve got some quick ideas to spoil someone special, while on a budget.

  1. An IOU card

Mums are always busy and always running out of time. Genius idea: offer an IOU card for some chores around the house?! It could be: 10 dinners cooked… or 20 wash loads of laundry… or even just a commitment to spend quality time together.

  1. Indoor herb garden

Head to Bunnings and grab a few herb plants (like parsley, coriander, basil and rosemary). Plant them in potters for her and she’ll never need to do those last-minute runs to Woolies for Monday night dinners!

  1. Homemade candles

We know candles are a safe bet. But some can cost ya $50 *cough* Glasshouse *cough*. So, why not make your own!? There are tonnes of crafty websites to show you how to do it (check out one here). You can pick a scent you know she likes and it’s hand-made (which she’ll love!).

  1. Homemade sweets (or her fave cake!)

Food doesn’t need to be store bought - you could make mum some cookies, and pop them in a Kmart jar with a ribbon around it if you’re feeling fancy! Bonus points if you know her favourite treat, and can make that for her.
