AustralianSuper has indulged in a little retail therapy by jointly buying Axicom

You might not think infrastructure assets sound like a sexy investment, but AustralianSuper sure does.

What's the key learning?

  • Super funds like Australian super love investing in safe, low risk assets.
  • Infrastructure assets like phone towers fall into this category.

👉 Background: AustralianSuper is Australia's largest superfund with over  $260B in assets under management (cop that Cbus and Hostplus).

👉 What happened: AustralianSuper has a penchant for big infrastructure assets - think NSW Ports, Transurban Queensland and of course Sydney Airport and Perth Airport.

👉 What else: AustralianSuper has bought Axicom in partnership with the Australian Tower Network (ATN) for $3.6bn. It shows how serious AustralianSuper is about steady, safe income.

🔔 What's the key learning?

💡While your risk appetite for investing may be high, your super funds certainly isn’t. Ya see, the main role of a super fund is to protect, invest and grow their members hard earned retirement funds.

💡And there is nothing safer than investing in infrastructure assets. That'd be airports, seaports, toll roads and telco towers.

💡So although telco infrastructure sounds boring.. for super investors, it kinda sexy. Aus Super will earn steady income from lease contracts with telco companies who rent space on the towers. That's hot.
