6 hacks to reach your savings goal

Money hacks are our favourite types of hacks - they help you improve how you manage your finances and feel more financially secure.

What's the key learning?

  • Keeping a monthly budget can help you keep track of your cash, and make sure there's enough left over to save
  • Leave your card at home!
  • Set up automatic transfers from the account your paycheck goes into, to your savings account
  • Install discount finders and use cashback apps.

Saving doesn’t always come naturally. It’s hard to stash cash away for a future day...instead of blowing it on a new Nintendo Switch to play with your mates.

But by using a few simple hacks, you can make saving as easy as...well, as easy as spending.

Let’s run through six nifty savings hacks to help you smash your savings goal in no time.

Set yourself up for success

What’s that old saying your dad used to yell at you before your maths test? Fail to prepare, and prepare to fail.

It was annoying, but there’s some truth to it. Without a monthly budget (even a simple one), it can be tough to keep track of your cash, and make sure there’s enough left over to actually save.

Unsure how to actually write a monthly budget? Check out our guide here.

Ditch the card and carry cash

We all love our debit and credit cards, ‘cos they make paying easy. Swipey swipey...tappy tap...and you’re off.

But there’s another reason we love them so much, too: it’s a lot less painful to part with money when it’s on a card than it is when it’s our cash. And, as a result, we spend more money. Yikes.

The theory is, the more transparent the payment outflow...the greater the aversion to spending. With cash, the transaction is very transparent. You have to physically hand over your cash. And often, you don’t carry a lot of it, so it feels rough when you have to part with it.

So, if you want to curb your spending when you’re out...try leaving your card at home. Set yourself a budget when you go out, take it in cash and spend what you’ve got.

Automate your savings

When your paycheck comes in, it’s easy to think about the ways you can treat yourself. Ya know, a new pair of kicks...a self-care day...with so much cash in there, why not?! I mean, a house could be years away, why not spend now?

And that’s the trouble with manually transferring your savings. We are our own biggest roadblocks.

Instead, set up automatic transfers from the account your paycheck goes into, to your savings account. By the time you wake up, your savings have been transferred already and you’re left with spending money.

Make savings a game

Here at Flux, we like things that are fun, and there’s absolutely no reason your savings shouldn’t be fun.

So, turn your savings into a game. There’s our Win The Week game, where you can deposit $25 into your savings account and go into the draw to win $250,000 in cash prizes.

Or, you can try the Coke bottle game, where you grab a 1.25L Coke bottle and chuck all your $2 coins in there...it works out to around $1,800 if you fill it to the brim!

Alternatively, just pick a mate to compete against. Whoever saves the most in the year gets a free dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Compare everything

In life, we cop bills left, right and centre. There’s internet, electricity, gas, phone bills...you name it. But for each of those, there are hundreds of different plans and providers that are all vying for your business.

So, you should always be comparing providers and prices, because you could be saving thousands. In fact, by just switching internet providers alone, you could save more than $1,000 a year!

Install discount finders and use cashback apps

Discount apps like can help you find the best coupon codes for your purchases. And the best bit? If you install it as a Chrome extension...everytime you shop, it automatically puts the code in at checkout.

Then double up with cashback apps  to pocket money every time you make a purchase.
